VIS 2.0 TFSi EA113 Balance Shaft Freewheel Deactivation Sprocket - VISBSDFW
The VIS freewheel is without doubt one of the most popular modifications for the EA113 2.0 TFSI engines, dealing with a common issue and helping to prevent future failures it has well earned its place fitted in thousands of VW, Audi, Seat & Skoda models all over the world!
Removing the rotating mass of the OEM balance shafts frees up a few extra horsepower, makes your engine rev faster and helps to prevent oil starvation keeping your engine healthy for longer. The simple removal of the factory cog for a VIS freewheel provides a small performance gain, but the much bigger gain comes from a decrease in rotating mass of the engine. By removing weight that your engine has to spin, it becomes easier for it to rev.
However, the main benefit and reason most look at fitting a VIS freewheel is to deal with the TFSI engines well documented weak point, Its counter-rotating balance shafts. The purpose of the balance shafts when the engines were designed is good, they are there to remove vibrations. However over time on this engine they can fail and cause all kinds of issues with the oil pump assembly that all result in engine failure. What is an oil pump? Quite simply, it’s the single most important mechanical component in making sure every crucial moving part of your engine is properly lubricated, no matter how hard you drive. Getting oil to your engine’s moving parts reduces friction to an all-but-harmless level. There’s always some friction, which is why engines wear out, eventually... But without proper oil flow from a good condition oil pump, your engine is toast before you know it – very expensive toast. Its well documented that going from having a warning light appear on the dash and then suffering complete engine failure if you dont turn the car off straight away can mean you go from a running and driving car to a seized engine incredibly quickly!
That’s where the VIS freewheel really shines, by removing the factory cog and fitting the VIS ‘freewheeling’ cog, you deactivate the balance shafts externally from being able to rotate without having to remove them physically. Then the oil pump chain can spin without extra resistance, massively reducing the risk of the oil pump chain, tensioner or the pump itself failing, causing catastrophic engine failure.
